My neighborhood: ghost town

I wonder if you could tell me what the sign in the second photo means? I'm currently learning japanese (about a month so far), so I can see that the hiragana makes, "oten", but looking that up in my Japanese dictionary just gives me "dirty/stain"!

haha. Yeah, it says "oden." There is a little "tenten" or "dakuten" making the "te" voiced, but it is drowned out by the light. Oden is a common Japanese comfort food found during winter. It's typically got large pieces of tofu, hard boiled eggs, daikon, etc. in a broth. Wikipedia, as usual, is probably the best place to get more information than you even wanted. Red lanterns like that pretty much always mark eating and drinking establishments, but usually of the hole-in-the-wall, mom and pop variety (they are called "akachouchin," by the way).

Good luck with Japanese - it is a lifelong endeavor. I am always happy to at least attempt to answer any questions about Japan or language study :)

Thank you! I feel a bit daft for not checking 'oden' as well as 'oten'; should have realised there might have been a tenten there! I'm at that stage with hiragana and katakana that I can read it if I concentrate, but I have to work it through, so I tend to miss obvious bits like that :)

Shimaa,

I was really happy to see you checking in on me :) I have been really busy recently and too scattered to write anything I considered blog-worthy. I just moved from Osaka, Japan to New York. So those pictures are no longer even my neighborhood. I'm jet-lagged and culture shocked. Maybe I should write something about that. But for now, I am trying to get myself acclimated, oriented and settled.

Hello Z-Lo
I am so happy everything is fine. I will be waiting for your posts about moving to NY. I can't wait to read your views about the cultural differences and the things that shocked you.

I wish you all the best of luck :)

Don't keep us waiting for long. Start writing ;)

Your's
